Infant Care

PURPOSE:
To educate expectant parents on normal appearances, procedures, and care of their newborn

  • Class participants will:
    • be able to discuss healthy newborn appearances, procedures, and reflexes
    • demonstrate bathing, proper positions for holding, burping, diaper changing, core care, and swaddling
    • identify ways of providing a safe environment for the infant.

A slideshow of normal appearances of newborns will consist of:

  • stock bites
  • bruising from vacuum extractor
  • Lanugos- Fine soft hair
  • dry cracking & pealing of skin
  • sucking blisters
  • appearance of crossed eyes
  • function of oil and sweat glands and pores
  • newborn rash
  • cradle cap
  • expects of mom's hormones on baby
  • enlarged breast tissue and witches milk
  • Cephilhematoma
  • rounded shaped head vs. molding of the head
  • vernex- waxy coating on the baby's skin
  • puff face
  • immature circulation

  • APGAR Scoring
    • Activity (Muscle Tone), Pulse, Grimace (Reflex Irritability), Appearance (Skin Color), Respiration
    • Each will be scored between 0-2 to determine the intensity of the signs observed
